Project Overview
Objective: Create a modular, weather-tight enclosure that integrates cleanly with the boat’s windshield, hardtop or bimini structure, and coamings. It must:
Open fast and stow neatly for fair‑weather days.
Seal tight for cold, wet, and windy runs.
Deliver excellent sightlines, minimal distortion, and warmth while staying dry.
Preserve the boat’s classic lines and ease of boarding.
System Style: A 4‑zone panel system:
Forward Connector (between windshield/top)
Port & Starboard Side Curtains
Aft Curtain (cockpit closeout)
Doorway Panels (swing or roll‑up)
All panels are quick‑remove and modular so you can run with any combination.
Materials & Hardware (Marine-Grade)
Canvas: Sunbrella® Marine (9.25 oz solution‑dyed acrylic) — UV/stain/mildew resistant, breathable for reduced condensation. Pick a solid tone to match hull or sheer stripe; use Sunbrella Binding for edges and gore reinforcements at stress points.
Clear Windows: Strataglass® (30–40 mil, optical grade, scratch‑resistant coating). Choose panel thickness based on span and expected flex; 40 mil for large, flat spans, 30 mil for curved/zip sections. Use heat‑sealed edges and anti‑chafe tapes where hardware contacts.
Thread: PTFE (e.g., Gore Tenara®) — non‑wicking, UV‑proof; ensures seam longevity.
Zippers: YKK® marine zippers (UV stabilized) with double pulls; use #10 coil for long openings, #8 for secondary.
Track/Attachment:
Polycarbonate track (Flex‑A‑Rail or awning track) on hardtop/bimini edges.
Common Sense or Lift‑the‑Dot fasteners on coamings.
Side‑release buckles and shock cord tensioners hidden in hems for tautness.
Stainless snaps and DOT fasteners where quick on/off is needed.
Reinforcements: Webbing load strips at upper corners, corner gussets, anti‑wick seam tape, rain flaps over zips, mini‑gutters/drip rails above doors.
Seals: Soft neoprene or felt seals at windshield and door jambs; baffle flaps at deck interfacing to shed water.
Ventilation: Passive vents (Sunbrella mesh or Dorade-integrated), optional clear “smile” windows with zip‑open screens.
